If you look around modern retail environments today, you will notice a quiet epidemic: playing it safe.
In a world plagued by dwindling foot traffic and endless e-commerce scroll, many retail brands default to predictable, low-risk, neutral displays that blend into the background. It feels sensible on a spreadsheet: lower initial capital risk, fewer bold statements to defend, and predictable rollouts.
Except for one massive catch: in modern retail, safe design is the most expensive mistake you can make.
E-commerce already handles convenience, so physical stores must offer an emotional reason to visit. Designing down to a beige baseline doesn’t guard your market share; it forfeits it. You pay for floor space, production, and distribution just to create invisible noise that shoppers walk right past. The real risk isn’t pushing boundaries; it’s uninspired design that gives shoppers zero reason to look up from their screens.
At the recent Shop! OMA and Design Awards, the industry set a clear mandate: the bar keeps rising. Transforming physical retail into memorable destinations requires turning retail displays into sculptural, multi-sensory art installations. But killer creative only works when it meets precision engineering and an unwavering refusal to settle for average.

Turning Fixtures into Art: How Strategic Risk Pays Off
So, how do you bridge the gap between high-concept creativity and real-world store floors? During the Shop! presentations, insights from TBG’s own Joe Vainikka, Nate Cartwright, and Nick Trinh illustrated exactly how high-level vision converts into retail reality.
For Joe Vainikka, who worked closely across creative and production teams, the thrill is in the tension between aesthetics and execution.
“The biggest challenge—and reward—is maintaining true retail functionality that, when successful, reads as sculptural art,” Joe noted.
TBG’s award-winning activations for adidas and Target succeeded because they layered key experiential trends: prop scaling to disrupt sightlines, dynamic lighting to shift moods, and rich textures that invited physical touch. By fusing these elements, Joe explained, “the displays felt less like standard fixtures and more like bespoke installations that made people truly feel something.”
That balance between physical impact and strategic alignment was equally vital for the Parachute Home launch at Target, where Nick Trinh helped bridge the vision between brand, retailer, and fabricator.
“This project stood out because it achieved the right balance of showcasing Parachute as a premium brand while keeping it approachable within a Target environment,” Nick reflected.
Nick emphasized that cross-functional collaboration was key, particularly when selecting environmentally responsible materials that aligned with the shared sustainability values of all three companies.
Ultimately, disrupting the retail floor doesn’t mean being loud for the sake of it. As Nick shared:
“While it’s easy to assume the loudest design wins, sometimes the most impactful experiences are thoughtful, intentional, and let the brand story come through naturally. Great experiences help shoppers connect, discover, and give them a reason to come back.”

The Scoreboard: 9 Shop! Awards & 5 Major Wins
When you stop playing safe, lean into uncompromised innovation, and execute with precision, the results speak for themselves. TBG builds award-winning brand activations that perform, scale, and transform retail floors.
Outperforming the field at this year’s Shop! Awards, The Bernard Group (TBG) brought home nine awards across five major high-impact retail activations:

Each of these activations proves that taking creative risks—backed by engineering muscle and sustainable execution—yields massive commercial success.

Benchmark & Innovation: Design Trends from Shop!
To elevate our future retail executions, we benchmarked award-winning activations and innovative displays presented at Shop! from top industry agencies (including a few of our own). Three distinct design techniques emerged as leading trends for driving shopper engagement, supporting premium brand perception, and ensuring focal recall.
1. The Hero Arch (Architectural Framing)
The Trend: Integrating soft, curved structures—often backlit, rendered in wood, or cut into acrylic—to frame a primary hero SKU or messaging. This naturally creates a focal point at eye level, breaking up the hard, rectangular lines of a typical store aisle.
- 818 3D Display: A dimensional, 3D vac-formed architectural arch translates the brand’s digital identity into a high-impact physical frame. By anchoring the hero bottle and label at eye level with lightweight styrene and PETG elements, the structure breaks through off-premise clutter and leverages cultural equity to capture Gen Z and Millennial attention.

Client Company: Calabasas Beverage Company - Lunazul Primero Introductory Display: Crafted from laser-etched metal, wood, and authentic agave accents, a decorative architectural frame evokes the brand’s Jalisco distillery heritage to elevate this super-premium tequila. The semi-permanent structure creates a boutique showcase that grounds the “farm-to-bottle” story while establishing a permanent, high-end presence on the floor.

Client Company: Heaven Hill - Parachute Home Luxury Bedding & Bath Launch at Target: A central recessed architectural arch serves as the apex of an in-line gondola reinvention, creating an elevated brand anchor inside Target. Paired with floating shelf moments and warm lifestyle backer graphics, the modular structure softens rigid store fixture lines to deliver an approachable luxury destination across flexible planogram footprints.

2. 3D Propping & Tactile Dimensionality
The Trend: Replacing flat print graphics with physical, dimensional elements, layered acrylic cutouts, and scaled-up, photorealistic prop replicas. This technique adds depth and physical interest that breaks the monotone plane of adjacent store shelves, increasing dwell time.
- Stella Artois Slim Can Cross Merchandising Display: A custom-molded, seamless 3D replica of the brand’s 12-ounce slim can acts as an unmissable floor anchor, capturing immediate attention through sheer scale. Featuring height-adjustable support poles and an integrated secondary shelf, the fixture maximizes valuable retail space while providing a flexible platform for high-velocity cross-merchandising.

Client Company: Anheuser – Busch - The Gran Centenario True Taste of Agave Display: A sculpted, molded resin blue agave piña splits open to reveal an illuminated, dimensional 3D replica of the tequila bottle, visually reinforcing the product’s origin at the heart of the plant. Motion-sensored lighting activates as shoppers walk past, adding interactive disruption and high visual contrast that draws immediate focus off-shelf.

Client Company: Proximo Spirits
- adidas Worldcup ‘26 Official Match Ball Launch at Dick’s Sporting Goods: Centered around a massive, 60-inch hard-coated foam soccer ball, this display uses a playful “gumball machine” metaphor to visually dispense the actual match balls below. Framed by custom powder-coated metal arch boxes and clear acrylic bins, the highly dimensional structure generates intense stopping power. Magnetic graphics and a durable, modular build ensure this high-energy retail moment remains easily refreshable for long-term use.

3. Layered Lighting & Brand Collaborations
The Trend: Relying on strategically placed LED edge strips, backlit diffusers, and warm spotlighting directed onto the product, rather than just ambient store lighting. This elevates perceived product value (the “jewelry store effect”) and guarantees high visual contrast.
- Gatorade Flash Pole/Pallet Topper:: Bright neon inks, tactile varnishes, and sharp vertical color blocking simulate a dynamic “Lightning Blast” visual effect without the cost of complex electronics. Pre-assembled for an under-10-minute store setup, the high-contrast display creates instant retail theater on a dual-branded fixture, driving maximum speed-to-shelf for a high-velocity summer launch.

Client Company: PBNA
- Skittles (“Dulces o Intensas?”): Dynamic LED lighting and a dimensional 3D header highlight a sharp 50/50 vertical split with contrasting background panels to separate two distinct flavor profiles on a single fixture. By transforming flavor into a high-contrast visual rivalry, the display creates immediate retail disruption and invites instant consumer engagement.
Entrant Company: Visual Branding
Client Company: MARS LATAM - Adidas ‘Shoebox’ Tower: Reimagining iconic footwear packaging into a stacked vertical landmark, this display incorporates illuminated brand logos and museum-style display cases with 100% recycled acrylic product windows. The layered structure pairs warm internal LED lighting with distinct shoebox-textured materials to highlight heritage footwear evolution while creating high-contrast stopping power across the retail floor.
